Castleton downs Colby 3-2 in overtime

12/6/2008 12:00:00 AM

Rutland, VT – Castleton took advantage of a disallowed goal 1:40 into the third period, scoring two goals in a 3-2 win over Colby College in an ECAC East/NESCAC match up.

The Mules appeared to score a power play goal and take a 2-1 lead when Dan Nelson deflected a shot past goaltender Jay Seals, but the officials waved the goal off, saying Nelson had committed a high-stick penalty.

Castleton received two goals from Stuart Stefan, including the game winner, his first two goals of the season. With 1:24 remaining in overtime, Stefan corralled a rebound to the left side of the crease off a Steve Culbertson shot to give the Spartans the win. Stefan scored his first goal of the season 10:55 into the second period for a 2-1 lead. Stefan skated across the ice in front of the net and redirected a shot by Jared Lavender past Colby net minder Cody McKinney.

With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Matt Ahern one timed a pass from Bobby Sullivan to send the game into overtime with his first goal of the season.

Colby got on the board first 6:54 into the second period. Jesse Lehman redirected a wrist shot by Chris Buonomo while the Mules were on the power play to take a 1-0 lead. The lead would last only 35 seconds until Evan Romeo scored his first of the season. Nick Westcott sent a shot on net that McKinney initially saved, but the puck flew up in the air. Romeo skated by the net, batting the puck just beyond the goal line.

Seals made 14 saves for his first win of the season, putting the Spartans record at 2-4-0 (1-3-0 ECAC East). McKinney stopped 26 shots in the losing effort as Colby fell to 2-5-1 (2-3 NESCAC) and is now winless in its last six games. During the stretch, which includes a tie at Salve Regina, the Mules have lost three one-goal games.

Castleton returns to the ice Tuesday, December 9 when they host SUNY Potsdam in a non-conference game at 7 pm. Colby is off until 2009 when the Mules travel to Southern Maine for a 7 pm start.
