Castleton wins 25th of the season, 9-8 over SUNY Plattsburgh in 10 innings

Castleton, VT – The Castleton State College baseball team won their 25th game of the season, defeating SUNY Plattsburgh 9-8 in 10 innings.

The two teams combined to use 12 pitchers, as both squads gear up for their respective conference tournaments. Matt Tuthill tossed the 10th to earn the win.

Travis Bass led Castleton with three hits and two runs scored. Phil Puleo and Chris Ragis each added a pair of hits and two RBI, while Ryan Bouck and Billy Bruneau each had two hits and one RBI.

Plattsburgh starter, Chris Murphy went five innings and allowed five earned while striking out three and walking six in the no-decision. Matt Kelly led the Cardinal offense with three hits and four RBI, while Zack Welch, John Campbell and Erik Schwind each had two hits. Matt Dahlin added a solo homerun for 25-13 Plattsburgh State.

Plattsburgh trailed 8-7 entering the ninth inning and turned a misplayed bunt into the tying run. In the bottom of the 10th, Castleton used a walk, an error, a wild-pitch and finally a balk to end the game.

Castleton travels to St. Joseph's College (Me.) as the top seed in the North Atlantic Conference tournament. Castleton squares off against #4 U. Maine- Farmington on Friday at 2:00 pm. With the win Castleton improves to 25-10 on the season. The 25 wins sets a new all-time high for any Castleton baseball team. The Spartans also end their home season a perfect 10-0.

Plattsburgh State will travel to Cortland this weekend for the SUNYAC tournament as the #3 seed. The Cardinals will take on SUNY Brockport at 10:00 am on Friday morning.

Both tournaments are four-team double-elimination tournaments that stretch from Friday through Sunday.
