Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College baseball team plated 13 runs in the bottom of the third inning and held on to win a 13-6 non-league contest over Middlebury College.

Middlebury got on the board first with three runs in the first inning. Gabe Broughton led off the game with a walk and was followed by a Nick Lefeber single, a walk to Noah Walker and an RBI-single John Lanahan to start the game off. After a strikeout, Sam Timberg delivered a two-run single to put the Panthers out in front. Middlebury would plate on more in the top of the third on a Peter Bauman sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 lead.

Middlebury starter, John Lanahan was lights-out for the first two innings, allowing just one hit his first time through the Spartan order. The third inning was another story as the second time through the order proved to be a tall task for the hard-throwing right-hander. Travis Bass led off the inning with a triple to centerfield and was followed by a walk, a Phil Puleo RBI-single and an error. Chris Ragis then drove a three-run homerun to the opposite field to give Castleton a 5-4 lead.

Castleton sent 18 men to the plate in the decisive inning, plating 10 earned runs, nine hits and capitalizing on five Panther walks.

Spartan southpaw, Matt Tuthill picked up the win in relief, tossing three perfect innings after starter Travis Bass was lifted after the fourth.

Puleo finished the afternoon 4 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Ragis ended up 2 for 5 with four RBI, while Ryan Bouck and Bass were both 2 for 5 with a pair of RBI.

Lanahan collected a pair of hits, while Timberg drove in three runs to lead the 14-11 Panthers.

With the win Castleton improves to 24-10 on the season and was a perfect 7-0 versus teams from Vermont this season. The 24 wins equals the most by any Castleton team, set in 2002. The Spartans are back in action tomorrow when they play host to Plattsburgh State at 3:30 pm. Middlebury returns home to take on Lyndon State at 4:00 pm.
