Castleton sweeps NAC opener, 15-3, 9-0 over Elms College

Norwich, CT -The Castleton State College baseball team swept their conference opening double-header 15-3 and 9-0 over Elms College. The win nudges the Spartans over .500 for the first time this season at 8-7 (2-0 NAC).

The Spartans jumped out to an early edge plating two runs in the first inning on a pair of doubles by Travis Bass and Phil Puleo. Chris Ragis drove in Puleo with a single two batters later.

Elms would scratch out an unearned run in the bottom of the inning before Castleton answered with four more in the top of the second. Back-to-back solo homeruns by Puleo and Bouck in the fourth, followed by a four-run fifth inning assured Castleton of the easy victory.

Jeremy Gilcris pitched six innings, striking out eight in the win. Puleo ended the day going 4 for 4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Eric Anderson added three hits and two runs scored, while Anthony DiPietrantonio chipped in two hits, three RBI and three runs scored.

In the nightcap Tom Cummings was virtually unhittable as a cruised through seven innings, allowing just two hits while striking out nine.

Travis Bass had three hits, including a pair of doubles and three RBI from his leadoff spot. Ryan Bouck added three singles, an RBI and two runs scored. Puleo capped off a break-out afternoon with two more hits and two runs scored.

Castleton is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Williams College for a nine-inning game.
