Castleton's streak stopped at 11 in split with St. Joe's

Standish, ME –Castleton has secured the North Atlantic Conference regular season title with a split at St. Joseph's College (Me.). Castleton lost the first game 7-4 and bounced back to throttle the Monks 14-1 in the nightcap. With the split Castleton finishes with a 10-2 overall record, securing the top spot in the upcoming NAC tournament.

In the opener, Tom Cummings pitched six innings allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Brandon Heck pitched another scoreless inning in relief, stretching his scoreless streak to 12 innings on the season.

Castleton out-hit their guests, 7-6 but a costly error led to four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth that led to the loss.

Travis Bass had a pair of hits, while Tim Zorio added a triple and run scored to lead the Spartans. Eric Anderson doubled and had two RBI, while Chris Ragis doubled with one RBI.

In the nightcap, Castleton pounded 13 hits and rode the strong pitching of freshman, Ken Cook to the 14-1 victory. Cook tossed six strong, allowing one earned on three hits and three walks while striking out four.

Phil Puleo was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as he had three hits, including a double and a three-run homerun with four RBI. Travis Bass also added three hits and four RBI, also scoring three runs. Eric Anderson went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI, while Tim Zorio added three hits and two runs scored for 23-10 (10-2 NAC) Castleton.

The 23 wins matches Castleton's total from last season and is one shy of Head Coach, Ted Shipley's best mark of 24 achieved in 2002.

Castleton is back in action on Tuesday, May 1 when they host Middlebury College at 4:00 pm.
