Box Score 2 Castleton, VT – The Castleton State College baseball team took a pair of North Atlantic Conference games from the University of Maine-Farmington on Sunday, winning the opener 5-1 and taking the nightcap 13-8.
In the opener, freshman Ken Cook tossed a complete-game four-hitter to earn the win. Cook allowed the lead-off man to reach base in five out of seven innings, but battled through thanks in part to three double plays turned in by the Castleton defense.
The Spartans plated single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings as Jon Handy, Billy Bruneau and Phil Puleo each had RBI singles.
Maine-Farmington scored their lone run in the fifth inning when Greg Melanson led off with an infield single and went to second on a throwing error. Melanson stole third, and after a walk and strikeout, was doubled home by Kyle Shea.
Castleton added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Bruneau was hit by a pitch to lead things off. After an Eric Anderson sacrifice moved him to third, Anthony DiPietrantonio stroked a run-scoring double to center field, followed by an ribbie single from Tim Zorio.
Pat Howell took the loss for the Beavers, throwing all six inning, allowing nine hits and five earned.
Fresh off from his walk-off double from Saturday, Ryan Bouck added two singles, a stolen base and one run scored.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, Castleton sent 12 men to the plate before the Beavers were able to record an out. The Spartan first inning plated 11 runs on eight hits, including a two-run homerun by Chris Ragis. Castleton also received a Billy Bruneau triple and a two-run double from Anthony DiPietrantonio.
Castleton starter, Craig Borgen tossed five innings, allowing 13 hits, all eight runs (three earned), while striking out three. Brandon Heck pitched two no-hit innings in relief, striking out a pair.
On the afternoon Farmington was led by Kyle Shea with four hits in six at-bats, including a pair of doubles and three RBI. Farmington falls to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in conference.
Travis Bass collected five hits in eight at-bats for the 15-9 (701 NAC) Spartans. Phil Puleo had another good day at the plate, going 4 for 7 with 5 RBI. Jon Handy went 4 for 9 with three RBI, while Bruneau finished with three hits, two runs and a pair of RBI.
Castleton returns to action on Tuesday when they host Norwich in a non-league doubleheader.
