Box Score 2 Castleton, VT – The Castleton State College baseball team took a pair of North Atlantic Conference games from Thomas College winning the opener 8-2, and the nightcap 6-5.
In the opener, Jeremy Gilcris scattered eight hits in a complete-game effort, striking out three and allowing a pair of runs in the win.
The Spartans plated three runs in the bottom of the second when Chris Ragis singled, followed by a Billy Bruneau single. Ragis went from first to third on the hit, and Bruneau took second on the throw to third. Eric Anderson plated both with a single of his own, and after a perfect sacrifice bunt by Anthony DiPietrantonio, Anderson was singled home by Tim Zorio who had three hits in game one.
Thomas got a run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Jared Fieldsend. Castleton answered with two in the bottom of the inning, one more in the fifth and two in the sixth to coast to victory.
In the nightcap Thomas plated a run in the top of the first on a Matt Pavlis double, followed three more singles. Castleton Starter, Ron Cahill, would settle down and not allow another run until an unearned in the top of the third to make it 2-0. The Spartans came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning and one more in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
Thomas plated two more in the sixth, tying the game. After holding Castleton scoreless in the sixth the Terriers scored one off from reliever Rob Turner in the seventh.
In the bottom of the inning Bass was hit by a pitch, and with two outs Phil Puleo singled to put the winning run on base. Ryan Bouck sent everyone home with a 2-run game ending double to seal the win.
For the two games Bass was 4-6 with a double, triple, five runs and two RBI. Puleo finished 5-8 with two doubles and two runs.
With the wins Castleton improves to 13-9 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Spartans will host Maine-Farmington tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm in another NAC doubleheader.
