Box Score 2 New London, CT -The Castleton State College baseball team split a double-header at The United States Coast Guard Academy, dropping the opener 1-0, and winning the nightcap 15-0.
In a classic pitcher's duel, which saw both pitchers allow just four hits, Ron Cahill was the tough-luck loser as an uneared run in the first inning proved to be Castleton's undoing.
The Spartans were shaky in the field to start the gameas the second batter of the inning reached on an error with one out. Castleton then had a chance at a double-play to get out of the inning unscathed, but they could not turn it over and the inning stayed alive. The next batter reached on yet another Castleton error, Brian Lisko would then single home a run to provide all the offense the Bears would need.
Coast Guard pitcher, Will Becker tossed the complete-game four-hitter, striking out three and facing just five batters over the mnimum.
Cahill's final line was six innings, three strikeouts, four hits and the one unearned run.
In the day's second game Castleton's bats came alive as they sent 10 men to the plate in teh second inning to erupt for six runs. Billy Bruneau provided the big blast in the inning, a grand slam to right field, his first collegiate homerun. The Spartans would add a single run in the third, four in the fifth and four more in the seventh to salvage the split.
Tom Cummings was very efficient in his five innings of work, allowing four hits while striking out four and walking two to earn the win. Jeremy Gilcris pitched a pair of shut-out innings in relief, striking out three and allowing just one base runner.
Chris Ragis led the offense with three hits, including a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Travis Bass added a pair of hits, including a homerune, three RBI and three runs scored from the top of the lineup.
Castleton improves to 5-5 and is scheduled to play their home opener on April 1, at 2:00 pm versus Keene State College.
