Castleton sweeps double-header from Colby-Sawyer 14-1, 9-0

Tampa, FL -The Castleton State College baseball team swept a double-header from Colby-Sawyer College, taking the first game 14-1 and shutting the Chargers out in the nightcap 9-0.

The Spartans pounded out 18 hits in support of starting pitcher Tom Cummings. Cummings tossed five innings, allowing just the one earned run while striking out four. Jeremy Gilcris threw two innings in relief, allowing three hits while striking out one.

The Spartans would plate seven runs in the first inning, as they sent 12 men to the plate in the opening frame. The team would score at least one run in every inning on their way to the easy victory.

Castleton's offensive outburst saw seven Spartans with multi-hit games, led by Tim Zorio's 3-3 effort. Zorio collected three RBI and score a pair of runs ot go along with his three base-hits. Phil Puleo also had a three-hit day, including a double, one RBI and one run scored. Freshmen Jon Handy and Billy Bruneau each drove in three runs, with Handy collecting two hits and Bruneau one.

In the nightcap Ron Cahill tossed five innings of four-hit baseball, while striking out six to earn the win. Rob Turner tossed a perfect inning in relief, striking out two out of the three batters he faced.

Once again Castleton's offense was up to the task as five players produced multi-hit games. Ryan Bouck went 3-3 with a pair of RBI and one run scored. Anthony DiPietrantonio collected three hits and one RBI as the sophomore second baseman finished the day a combined 5 for 9. Bruneau and Handy each added a pair of hits, while classmate, Travis Bass added two hits and a pair of RBI from his leadoff spot.

With the wins Castleton improves to 4-3 on the young season and will take on Wentworth Institute of Technology this evening.
