Box Score Castleton, VT-Castleton junior guard, Josh Howe scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Castleton men's basketball team to a 90-72 non-conference win over Skidmore at Glenbrook Gymnasium. Howe paced five Spartans in double-figures as Castleton never trailed in the contest. With the win Castleton improves to 2-3 while Skidmore falls to 3-3.
Castleton held a 21-point advantage after the first half thanks in large part to shooting a sizzling 55% from the field and 47% from three-point land. Castleton knocked in eight threes during the opening frame, using a 15-3 run midway through the half to stretch the lead.
The Spartans started the second half right where they left off stretching the lead to 32 with 15 remaining in the contest. Howe was a huge part of the run in all facets of the game, ending his night with eight rebounds, six assists and five steals to go along with his scoring efforts.
Skidmore would not go away, cutting the lead to 19 with eight minutes to go on a three-pointer by Dave Phelps. Phelps finished the afternoon with a team-high 14 points. The Thoroughbreds would also get double-figure efforts from Jon Douglas and Jeff Altimar each with 13.
In the end the Spartans proved to have too many weapons, as Joey Farley canned four triples en route to a 16 point game, while Alden Gregory and Kevin Cayea chipped in 12 and 10 each. Saddled with foul-trouble for the first half, Chris Young made his presence felt over the final 20 minutes, scoring 13 of his 15 points and hauling in eight rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, November 4 when they travel to Colby-Sawyer for a 7:30 pm non-conference affair. Skidmore returns home to play host to Cazenovia, tip-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
