Castleton evens record with 4-3 win at SUNY-Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Four different players scored goals as the Castleton State College women's ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 4-3, Sunday afternoon to earn a split of the season-opening two-game series for both teams.

Juniors Kayla Twigge and Adrianna Riggio and freshmen Amy Bedard and Kate Gray each scored a goal for the Spartans. Senior goalie Vanessa Carter registered 26 saves in the win.

Cortland was led by junior Heather Crowley, who recorded a goal and an assist. Junior Julie Freeland and sophomore Jeanna Dippel each scored a goal. Senior goalie Olivia Nuzzo started in goal and made five saves in 31 minutes, 11 seconds before giving way to freshman Briana Bartlett, who stopped 10 shots.

Freshman, Amy Bedard put Castleton ahead 13:34 into the first period with her first collegiate goal, assisted by Maeghan Roach. Cortland's Dippel would tie the score at one heading into the first intermission.

The Spartans would take the lead for good in the second period as Kayla Twigge and Adrianna Riggio would score to give Castleton a 3-1 lead. The Red Dragons would get one back, before freshman Kate Gray scored the game winner on her first collegiate goal with under seven minutes remaining in the period.

Cortland would cut the lead to 4-3 in the third period, but Castleton would hang on for the win.

Castleton returns to action on November 9 at 7:00 pm when they travel to Norwich University.
