Castleton drops ECAC East contest 8-1 to UMass-Boston

12/2/2006 12:00:00 AM

Rutland, VT-UMass-Boston came out of the gate and received two quick goals from Andrea Ciarletta in the first period. The Beacons never looked back as they dismantled Castleton 8-1 Saturday night.

The Beacons took the lead thanks to Ciarletta and continued to dominate on the offensive end through out the night. UMass-Boston scored 4 goals in the second period, three of them by Casey Turner and another added by Kate Webb. After the third goal in the second period and being down 5-0, Castleton head coach, David Stockdale switched goalies and went with Kalla Robb over starter Rachel Dunn. It slowed the Beacons down a bit, but not enough for the Spartans to get back in the game. UMass-Boston netted two additional goals in the third, a fourth goal by Turner and the Beacons' final tally by Erin Shephard. Castleton got on the board in the third after an offensive surge to make the game 8-1 thanks to Maryanne Diehm.

The two Spartan goalies combined for 33 saves as Castleton falls to 2-6 overall and 0-6 in ECAC games. Shannon Palmer earned the win for the Beacons and recorded 18 saves. The Beacons move to 1-4-1, 1-4 in ECAC play. Both teams will be back in action tomorrow as UMass-Boston travels to St. Michael's for a 3:20 face-off and the Spartans stay home to host Southern Maine at 2 pm.
