12/2/2006 12:00:00 AM

Rutland, VT-The Spartans were back in action a day after the biggest win in program history to take on another ECAC opponent, the Bowdoin Polar Bears. The Spartans had a lead with under a minute to go before the Bears converted on a 6-on-3 power-play to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The Bears got on the board in the first period from a goal by Matt Smith in front of the net. Castleton came out in the second period and kept the puck in their offensive end for most of the period, but Bowdoin goalie Nick Smith had a solid performance to keep them at bay. Midway through the second period Castleton played the puck into their offensive half and Smith came out of his crease to play the puck, but Castleton defenseman Travis Martell beat him, scoring an empty net goal to even the game at one apiece. The third period play continued to remain even, with Smith and Spartan goalie Jeff Swanson making big saves for their respective teams. Castleton got a goal with five minutes left by Jeff Lazeren, who tipped the puck in off a shot from the right side of the goal by Martell. Castleton's defense remained strong until the 2:52 mark when the Spartans committed two penalties. Bowdoin called a time-out and pulled Smith, making a 6-on-3 power-play for the Bears. Bowdoin would convert on the power-play with 20 seconds remaining in the game on a Colin MacCormick goal to send the game to overtime. The outstanding goal-play continued into the extra session, each goalie making plays to end the game in a 2-2 tie.

Jeff Swanson made 29 saves for Castleton. The Spartans go to 3-1-2 and 1-1-2 in ECAC hockey. Nick Smith made 27 saves for the Bears, who went to 3-0-2 and 2-0-2 in ECAC hockey. The Spartans play next on December 8 when they host SUNY Cortland at 7 pm. Bowdoin resumes play December 8 as they host Colby at 7 pm.
