Spartans

Jacob Godfrey begins his first year as an assistant coach for Vermont State University Castleton this fall.

A 2021 graduate of VTSU Castleton, Godfrey was a four-year starting midfielder, playing in 75 games, scoring 11 goals and 6 assists and was a three-time member of the Little East Conference All-Academic team. In his first season as a Spartan, he helped lead the Spartans to the 2017 North Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament championships, earning the team the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament. He scored the game winning goal in Castleton’s 1-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in the NAC final with just 1 second left in the first half. He was a two-year co-captain of the squad and named team MVP in 2018 and 2021.

A native of Castleton, VT, Godfrey was a 3-sport standout (soccer, hockey and baseball) for Rutland High School where he was captain and named to the All-State soccer team as a senior. He played his club soccer for Summit FC under VTSU Castleton coach John O’Connor.

Coach Godfrey graduated from VTSU Castleton with an undergraduate degree in Sports Management, minoring in Business Administration. Upon graduation he worked in Major League Baseball as an equipment manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers minor league systems as well as an Assistant Equipment Manager at Middlebury College. He returned to VTSU Castleton in 2026 and works full-time in athletic field maintenance at both the Castleton campus and Spartan Arena in Rutland.
