MacDonald came to Castleton for the 2019 season after spending the previous season as an assistant at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where she coached two All-Conference student-athletes and one All-Region honoree. Her primary duties included assisting the head coach in all aspects of coaching and program administration, as well as on and off-campus recruitment of high-achieving student-athletes.

In 2020, Castleton earned the NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award for the 11th consecutive year and saw four Spartans named as NFHCA Scholars of Distinction. 

In MacDonald's first season, the team went 11-8 (8-4 LEC). In a season marked by athletic and academic accolades, Kaitlin Bardellini won Rookie of the Year while Gabrielle Hunt was tabbed LEC First-Team All-Conference. The Spartans received the LEC Academic Award, topping all other field hockey programs with an average GPA of 3.53. The team landed 14 players on the NFHCA National Academic Squad. 

MacDonald also spent time at Shenandoah University as an assistant, aiding in the development of five All-ODAC players, as well as one All-State and one All-Region honoree. She also helped recruit the 2018 ODAC Rookie of the Year for the Hornets.

Outside of the collegiate landscape, MacDonald spent two years working for USA Field Hockey as a head coach, assistant coach and a tournament selector and earned her USA Field Hockey Level 2 certification in July 2016. She also spent three years coaching youth players in a travel program and one season coaching at the Foxcroft School in Virginia, helping guide the team to a DAC Championship while coaching seven All-Conference players.

MacDonald was a four-year player and three-year starter for Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, appearing in 69 games and amassing 41 career points. As a senior, she helped guide the Generals to a first-place finish in the regular season and an appearance in the ODAC Championship game for the first time in 10 seasons. She was also an NFHCA Senior All-Star selection.
