Ted Shipley

Ted Shipley is entering his 24th year at the helm of Castleton baseball.

The 2025 Baseball team finished with an overall record of 13-25 and 4-12 in the LEC. The Spartans picked up impressive wins at RPI, Emerson College, and LEC opponent EastConn. The Spartans ultimately fell just short of playoffs. Jackson Cardozo earned LEC First Team honors while Tyler Dubreuil earned Third Team honors.

The 2024 season saw the Spartans go 10-30 overall and 5-11 in Little East play just missing a postseason appearance.

In 2023 the Spartans went 18-22 overall and 6-10 in the conference under Shipley, leading them to the first Little East Conference Tournament appearance since entering the tournament in 6th place. The Spartans lost their first game of the tournament before beating the 5th seed, and they were eliminated by the 4th seed.

In 2022 the Spartans went 12-21-1 overall and 5-11 in the Little East.

The 2021 season saw the Spartans go 9-23 overall and 6-10 in conference coming off of a shortened 2020 season due to Covid.

In 2019, the Spartans first season in the Little East the team went 17-21 overall and 7-9 in the conference. 

Prior to joining the Little East in 2019, Shipley led the Spartans to five consecutive NAC Championships seven straight winning records. 

In 2018, the Spartans went 21-3 within the NAC for the third consecutive year, reaching the 30-win mark for the sixth time in the last nine seasons. Castleton swept through the NAC Tournament to earn its eighth berth in the NCAA Tournament. 

During the 2017 campaign, the Spartans went 34-10 overall, including two eight-game winning streaks and a seven-game winning streak. Shipley was named NAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time, and he also boasted the NAC Rookie of the Year (Davis Mikell), the NAC Pitcher of the Year (Michael LaBeau), and the NAC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year (Steve Jurkiewicz). The Spartans led the nation in earned run average (2.24), rallied from the loser's bracket to win the NAC Tournament, and advanced to the New York Regional of the NCAA Tournament.  

In 2016, the Spartans won the third most games in program history, going 32-10 overall and a perfect 17-0 at home during the regular season, which culminated with the team’s third consecutive NAC Title and NCAA Tournament appearance. Six players earned all-conference honors, led by NAC Player of the Year Nick Swim and Pitcher of the Year Sam Spencer. Castleton then went 1-2 in its NCAA Regional, with a win over Union. Swim & Spencer both earned all-region honors for their play during the year.

In 2015, Castleton went 31-11 during the regular season and swept the NAC Tournament in three games to win its fourth NAC Title in the last six years. A program-record six players were named First-Team All-Conference, while Sam Spencer and Tyler Lord won NAC Pitcher and Player of the Year. Shipley’s pitching staff was one of the best in the nation, ranking fifth in ERA (2.71), eighth in WHIP (1.21), ninth in hits allowed per nine innings (7.9) and 17th in shutouts (6).

The 2014 season saw the Spartans go 29-12 overall and earn the NAC Title with a pair of victories over Husson on the final day of competition. Castleton went 20-3 in conference play despite only having one player earn first-team all-conference honors and three more named to the second team. Following their NAC Championship they advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

In 2013, Shipley led the Spartans to a 28-14 record, including a 22-2 mark in conference play during the regular season. The team fell in the NAC Title game but was selected for the ECAC New England Championship. Four players earned first-team all-conference honors and one earned second-team honors.

Shipley guided Castleton to its second NEAC championship in three seasons in 2012. The Spartans beat Colby Sawyer to earn the NEAC East Championship, Penn State-Berks to win the NEAC and earn an NCAA bid, then went 1-2 in the NCAA regional tournament. The squad finished with a record-tying 34 wins on the season. Shipley's Spartans excelled in plate discipline and baserunning in 2012, placing eighth in the nation in walks (204) and fifth in the nation in stolen bases (138). The Spartans were also one of the nation's best defensive teams in 2012, ranking tenth in the nation in fewest hits allowed per game (7.74). 

During Shipley's time at Castleton, the Spartans have had record-setting seasons three times. The Spartans set a record in season wins in 2002 with 24 wins, again in 2007 with 26 games, and most recently in 2010, 2012, and 2017 with 34 wins in each campaign.

The Spartans have qualified for postseason play in 12 of Shipley's 18 campaigns, winning eight conference championships, and earning eight NCAA Tournament bids in the process. He has also been named NAC Coach of the Year seven times (2017, 2015, 2013, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007).

Shipley graduated from Lyndon State College with a BS in physical education in 1986 and an AS in business administration in 1987. As a student-athlete at LSC, Shipley competed in three different sports all four years and was named Athlete of the Year in 1985.

Immediately after graduating Shipley taught physical education and coached at the Waynflete School in Portland, Maine for eight years. Just prior to coming to Castleton he coached baseball at Vermont Technical College for 4 years, where he posted an impressive 67-16 record. 

He earned a graduate degree in kinesiology from the University of New Hampshire in 2001. He currently resides in Bomoseen, Vermont with wife, Michelle, and daughter, Olivia.
