CASTLETON, Vt.- The Vermont State University Castleton Spartans swept both matches on the final day of the Vermont Volleyball Classic and finished the tournament 3-0.
Game 1: VTSU Castleton 3, VTSU Lyndon 0
Castleton won in straight sets by the score of 25-18, 25-9, and 25-12.
Offensively, Madison Sheehan (Queensbury, N.Y.) led the way with 10 kills, while Sam Ford (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Jance King (Greenville, N.Y.) recorded six and five kills, respectively.
Payton Vilmont (Colchester, Vt.) led the way with 29 assists and recorded four service aces.
Game 2: VTSU Castleton 3, VTSU Johnson 0
Castleton won the sets 25-19, 25-20, and 25-19.
Vermont State Johnson raced out to a 9-4 lead in the first set, before the Spartans went on a 10-3 run to take the lead. They began to pull away at this point and won the set after a service ace by Walsh.
Unlike the first set, Castleton started strong, jumping out to a 19-6 lead. However, the Badgers did not give up, going on a 14-5 run to make things interesting, before Castleton won the set after a Johnson service error.
The Spartans opened the third set by scoring four straight points, but Johnson tied it at 7-7. Castleton pulled away, eventually holding a 24-15 lead. However, the Badgers once again did not give up, going on a 4-0 run before the Spartans closed it out.
For the match, Olivia Smith (Newark, Ill.) led the team with nine kills. Nicolette Vaughn (Plainfield, Ill.) led the way with 17 digs, and Alondra Rojas (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) recorded 25 assists. Walsh also recorded five service aces.
Next up, the Spartans will play two matches at SUNY-Delhi versus Hamilton College and SUNY-Delhi. The matches are scheduled for 11 am and 1 pm, respectively.
