Castleton Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener to Norwich

CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team fell to intrastate rival Norwich, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 2-0 Norwich
  • Location: Castleton, Vt. | Dave Wolk Stadium
  • Records: 2-0 Norwich  | 1-2 Castleton

How it Happened:
Norwich wasted no time putting pressure on the Spartans, sending several shots toward Castleton goalkeeper Julie Cooper in the opening minutes. Cooper made three saves in the first three minutes to keep the Cadets off the scoreboard.

The Cadets controlled possession for much of the opening half, out shooting the Spartans 9-3 through the first 45 minutes, but Chloe Green was able to get one off just wide of the net.

Cooper turned aside five shots in the opening half to preserve the scoreless tie.

Castleton made a change in goal to open the second half with Grace Kallio taking over between the pipes. Norwich immediately tested the new keeper, but Kallio answered with three saves in the opening minute and a half and finished the half with five saves.

The Spartans began to generate more offensive pressure with Jolina Canillas putting a shot on target that was turned aside by the Cadets' goalkeeper. The ensuing corner kick gave Castleton another opportunity, as Green and Addi Hubert registered back-to-back shots on goal, but neither found the back of the net. Ella Drake added another quality opportunity for the Spartans, but the Norwich keeper came up with another save.

Norwich broke through in the 68th minute, taking a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, the Cadets struck again on a long ball, doubling their advantage to 2-0. They held on from there to secure the shutout victory.
