CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Vermont State University Castleton women's tennis team battled throughout the match but fell to Plattsburgh State, 6-1.
The Spartans opened doubles play with a pair of closely contested matches.
Brooke Hecker and
Olivia Rutkowski battled at the first spot before falling 3-6, while
Maggie McKearin and
Halle Hipple came up just short at the third spot, 5-7.
Andrea Rodriguez and
Grace Pluff also fought through a competitive second-spot match, with all six games reaching deuce before Plattsburgh ultimately secured the 0-6 victory.
In singles play, McKearin earned Castleton's lone point at the fifth spot, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-2. Hecker put together a competitive match at the first spot, falling 2-6, 4-6, while Rutkowski battled at the second spot before falling 1-6, 3-6. Rodriguez and Pluff each fell at the third and fourth spots, by scores of 3-6, 0-6. Hipple fell at the sixth spot, 0-6, 0-6, but several of her games went to deuce.
The Spartans will head to Hudson Valley Community College for an exhibition match on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m.
