CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton spring student-athletes gathered in Casella Theater on Monday evening as the department handed out awards for Most Valuable Player and the President's Cup.
The women's track and field program was awarded the President's Cup for Academic Excellence by Vermont State University President David Bergh Ed.D. The award is given each season to the team with the highest cumulative grade point average. The team posted a GPA of 3.56, finishing .06 ahead of the softball team.
Women's Lacrosse
The women's lacrosse team named
Phoebe Loomis as its Most Valuable Player following a senior campaign in which she led the team in goals (36), points (45) and draw controls (54). Loomis put up a team-best nine points in a 16-1 win over Thomas College on April 12, dishing out five assists while scoring four goals. She graduates seventh in program history in draw controls with 148 and eighth in caused turnovers with 78.
Men's Lacrosse
The men's lacrosse team battled in its first season under head coach
Nathan Snitz, opening the year with a 14-11 win over the University of Mount Saint Vincent. The program selected solo captain
Jason Samek as its 2026 team MVP. Samek appeared in 12 contests during his senior season, collecting 12 points on seven goals and five assists. He registered two man-up tallies, caused seven turnovers and grabbed 23 ground balls.
Baseball
The baseball squad will take part in the Little East Conference playoffs this week, currently 13-27 on the season and 5-11 in conference play. The program selected catcher/right-handed pitcher
Trey LaVigne as its MVP. LaVigne has appeared in 30 contests this season, pitching in 15 of them. He has 100 at-bats, driving in 22 runs while recording seven doubles, one triple and a pair of home runs. He has collected 31 hits and scored 32 runs. On the mound, he is 1-2, allowing 21 hits, walking 13 and striking out 14.
Softball
The softball team claimed the Little East Conference regular season title on Saturday after splitting with UMass Dartmouth on Senior Day to finish 12-4 in conference play and 21-12 overall. Sophomore
Makayla Walsh was named the team MVP. She has appeared in 30 contests, making 27 starts. The catcher has 96 at-bats, recording 34 hits, 10 doubles and two home runs. She has been walked just twice and has an on-base percentage of .373. She leads the team with 139 putouts while adding seven assists. She had a season-high four hits against Rhode Island College on April 18.
Men's Tennis
The men's tennis team battled this season, posting an overall record of 2-10. Team MVP
Tanner Ciufo finished the season 2-9 in singles action while going 3-8 in doubles play at the first and third spots with
Remy Maynard or
Tyler Burke. Ciufo helped his team to a dominant 7-0 win over Vermont State University Johnson to open the season on March 22, claiming a point in singles in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Men's Track and Field
The men's track and field team saw another year of development and progression, with multiple school records and personal bests set during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Britain Goodemote was selected as the team's Indoor MVP after setting new personal records in the 55-meter dash (7.35), 60-meter dash (7.88), triple jump (13.42m) and long jump (6.12m).
Timothy Pratt was named the team's Outdoor MVP in his rookie season, leading the team in the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump. Pratt set a season-best mark of 13.03 in the hurdles at the Sean Collier Invitational while clearing 1.87m in the high jump at the Springfield College Outdoor Classic, where he placed second.
Women's Track and Field
The women's track and field team continues to be highlighted by its throwers, with
Isabell Lanfear named Indoor MVP and
Kalynn Stevenson earning Outdoor MVP honors. Lanfear set a new program record in the shot put with a toss of 12.93m at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship, placing second. She claimed three other podium finishes in the event, placing second at the Gordon Kelly Invite (Jan. 24), second at the Plymouth Panther Invitational (Jan. 17) and third at the USM Alumni Open (Dec. 13).
Stevenson continued to impress, finishing second in the discus at the New England Division III Championship with a toss of 41.48m. She also placed ninth in the shot put with a mark of 12.01m. Stevenson finished second at the LEC Outdoor Championship in the discus with a throw of 40.66m. She claimed three victories during the outdoor season, including two first-place finishes at the Springfield College Outdoor Classic on April 4 in the shot put (12.28m) and discus (40.93m). She also took first in the discus at the Sean Collier Invitational with a throw of 42.03m.
