SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team grabbed its fifth win of the season at Union on Wednesday with an 11-7 win over the Garnet Chargers, backed by
Trey LaVigne's third career home run, and
Joe Castellano's second home run this season.

How it Happened:
The Garnet Chargers took a 3-0 lead at the bottom of the first, forcing the Spartans to put the ball in play in the second inning.
Mikey Raby Jr. put out a sacrifice bunt and reached first on an error, allowing
Sebastian Vazquez to score Castleton's first run of the game to cut the lead to two (3-1).
At the bottom of the third inning, Union put up one more run off a single through the left side to extend the lead to 4-1. Castleton kicked up the tempo at the top of the fourth as LaVigne opened the inning with a home run, cutting the deficit to two (4-2). Castellano reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Raby to score, followed by a single to left center field, bringing in
Tripp Shytle to tie the game at four. The Spartans weren't done as
Alex McClelland took first on a fielding error to bring Castellano home, and
Carter Dickinson took advantage of a fielder's choice to take first, and then took second on an error. McClelland advanced to third on the error, while Shaw scored on the error to give Castleton a 6-4 lead.
The Spartans added to their lead at the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Vazquez to bring McClelland in for a 7-4 lead, which Castellano built on at the top of the seventh with a single down the left side to bring Shytle home for run number eight which McClelland followed up with a single to center field for a 9-4 Castleton lead.
Castellano lengthened the lead to seven at the top of the ninth as he launched his second home run of the season out to left field, as the Spartans took an 11-4 lead at the turn of the inning. The Garnet Chargers added three runs at the bottom of the inning, but the Spartans held on defensively for the 11-7 win.
Top Performers:
- LaVigne and Castellano led the Spartans with two hits each, combining for four RBIs.
- Nick Lescarbeau threw a career-high five strikeouts through seven innings.

The team heads to RPI for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 14, with the first pitch of game one set for 12 p.m.
