Radcliff’s 20-Point Night Not Enough as Castleton Falls to WestConn

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's basketball team fell to Little East Conference opponent Western Connecticut State University, 85-63, on Monday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

The Basics
Final Score: WestConn 85 , VTSU Castleton 63
Location: Glenbrook Gymnasium – Castleton, Vt.
Records: WestConn 17-5, 10-3 LEC | VTSU Castleton 6-15, 1-11 LEC

How It Happened
Castleton started the game energized, going on an early 5-0 run to take a 9-5 lead. WestConn answered with a run of their own to move ahead 15-12 before Joe Buxton buried a three-pointer to tie the game once again. Scoring was relatively even for much of the half, as both teams traded baskets and committed several turnovers.

However, a stretch of Spartan miscues allowed the Wolves to capitalize and build their largest lead of the half at 12 points with just over five minutes to play. Ben Seiler helped keep Castleton within striking distance by knocking down multiple three-pointers late in the half, but WestConn continued to convert off turnovers and closed out the half leading 46-26.

Castleton came into the second half looking to chip away at the deficit, but WestConn maintained control of the game. The Spartans had several scoring opportunities, but were not able to string together a sustained run. WestConn continued to shoot efficiently in the second half, especially from beyond the arc, going 45.5 percent from three-point range compared to Castleton's 36.4 percent. The Spartans shot 53.8 percent from the field in the second half, but the Wolves matched them at 52.8 percent, controlling the pace, eventually leading to the 85-63 final.

By the Numbers
  • Will Radcliff led Castleton with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field and 4-for-5 at the free throw line, adding nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.
