Spartan Field Hockey Outlasts West Conn 2-1

DANBURY, CONN.- The Vermont State Castleton field hockey team began Little East Conference play on Saturday as the Spartans traveled to Western Connecticut State. The Spartans dominated the scoresheet as they would go on to defeat the Wolves 2-1.

How It Happened
Castleton had the first shot on goal of the game but it was the Wolves who took the early lead as Ellenoire Schoen scored at 8:23. The Spartans outshot West Conn 4-1 in the period but West Conn held its 1-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Spartans continued to attack in the offensive zone in the second quarter but failed to get a goal. Patience finally paid off as Castleton found the back of the cage as Allison Friel (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area HS) assisted Gwyn Vincent (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) for the goal to knot the game at 1-1 at 23:49.

Castleton outshot the Wolves 8-0 in the third quarter. The Spartans took the lead with just over three minutes left in the period as Brooke Noble's (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson Secondary School) penalty corner found Peyton Richardson (Windsor, Vt./Windsor), who launched a long shot into the cage for the 2-1 lead.

The Wolves looked for the tying score in the fourth quarter. Both of their shots in the period went wide of the goal as the Spartans defense held them at bay.
