How It Happened
Castleton won the coin toss and deferred to the Owls to begin the game. It took Rowan three plays to find the endzone as the home team led 7-0 less than two minutes in. The next Spartan drive saw
RJ Monger's (Granville, NY/Granville Jr/Sr HS) pass intercepted on 1
st and 5 from the Spartan 11-yard line by Kam Brown who returned it 20 yards for the score. Brown picked off Monger again on Castleton's first play on its ensuing drive. The Owls needed seven plays to find the endzone as they led 21-0 at 10:13. They would go on to lead 42-0 at the end of the quarter.
Trailing 49-0 at the beginning of the second quarter, Castleton began its first drive of the quarter at its own 30 following a false start penalty. A pair of Rowan penalties helped move the Spartans into Owl territory. On first and 10 at the Rowan 44,
Anthony Cavalieri (Rutland, Vt./Mount Saint Joseph) completed a 21-yard pass to
Max Cutler (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) to put the Spartans at the Rowan 23. A Castleton penalty backed the Spartans up to the Rowan 38. Cavalieri completed a seven-yard pass to
Ty Dowell (Ruskin, Fla./Lennard HS) to get the Spartans to the 31-yard line. Cavalieri, however, was intercepted by Brown who ran 90 yards the opposite way for his second touchdown of the afternoon. The two teams then exchanged punts with the Spartan defense forcing Rowan's first punt of the day. The Owls led 63-0 at halftime.
The third quarter was scoreless. The Castleton defense forced a Rowan punt and a turnover on downs at the Spartan six-yard line with a fumble pushing the ball back to the 21.
The Owls scored two more touchdowns in the final quarter of play. Â Rowan recorded a safety as a bad snap on a Castleton punt attempt resulted in a blocked punt that went out of the endzone.
