Castleton Volleyball Swept by Corsairs

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Vermont State Castleton Spartans fell in straight sets against the UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs Saturday afternoon at Tripp Gymnasium. The set scores were 18-25, 15-25, and 10-25. Castleton is now 6-9 overall and 0-4 in LEC play.

The Spartans were up 5-3 early, scoring five consecutive points after UMass Dartmouth scored the first three points of the match. The Corsairs quickly turned it around and jumped out to a 19-12 lead.

Castleton made a comeback push, cutting the deficit to three on a run which included two kills from Lilli Burrows (Yarmouth, Maine) a kill from Jocelyn Ray (Essex, Vt.) and a service ace by Alondra Rojas (Thousand Oaks, Calif.). But UMass Dartmouth used a 5-1 run to take the first set 25-18.

Like the first set, the Spartans held an early 7-5. Sam Ford (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Marley Hill (Austin, Texas) recorded two kills apiece during this stretch. However, this lead was short-lived, and the Corsairs won 25-15.

UMass Dartmouth breezed by the third set, winning 25-10 to sweep the match.

Ray led the way offensively with six kills. Rojas was a dig shy of a double-double with 16 assists and nine digs, while Nicolette Vaughn (Plainfield, Ill.) led the team with 12 digs. Ford also had five kills and four blocks (one solo, three assisted).

Up next, the Spartans face off against Vermont State Johnson on Monday. First serve is set for 6 pm.
