Spartans Drop Match Against Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team fell 4-0 to Westfield State in nonconference action Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 4-0 Westfield State
  • Location:  Westfield, Mass. | Alumni Field
  • Records: 1-12-1 Westfield State | 2-9-2 VTSU Castleton

How it Happened:
Castleton looked to get on the scoreboard early after a Westfield State foul gave the Spartans a free kick from just short of midfield. Nate Lurie sent a long shot toward goal, but the Westfield State goalkeeper came off his line to make the save.

In the 17th minute, Jacques Alfani beat his defender while dribbling up the field and fired a shot toward the upper-left corner, but the Owls' keeper made the diving save to keep the game scoreless.

Westfield State threatened on the other end when they beat a Castleton defender, but Xander Berthiaume came off his line to make a sliding save. The Spartans came close to taking the lead on a corner kick from Alfani, who sent the ball into the box for Liam Cramer, but the header went narrowly over the crossbar.

Westfield State broke the deadlock with a goal off a free kick just outside the box. The Owls added a second goal off a cross from a corner kick before scoring again from outside the 20-yardline, placing a shot in the top corner to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Castleton came out aggressively after the break, with its best look of the game coming in the 48th minute. CJ Wallingford sent a corner kick into the box, but the Westfield State keeper was able to knock it away. Lurie settled the loose ball and sent it back into the area, but a deflection sent the attempt off the crossbar and back into the midfield.

The Spartans continued to increase the pressure, earning a free kick. Alfani's kick attempt struck the crossbar, and a Spartan header on the rebound sailed just over the net. Castleton recorded eight shots in the opening 15 minutes of the second half and outshot Westfield State, 12-8, in the period. The Owls added a fourth goal to secure the 4-0 victory.

By the Numbers:
  • Alfani and Lurie led Castleton with six shots apiece. Wallingford added three shots, while Cramer and Sam Barr each recorded two.
  • Castleton outshot Westfield State, 22-21, including a 12-8 advantage in the second half.
  • Berthiaume made four saves in the first half before Alex Roy recorded two saves in the second half.
