Women’s Hockey Rolls Past Pilgrims in 7-1 Road Win

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's ice hockey team earned its fourth Little East Conference win of the season Friday night, rolling past New England College on the road, 7-1, at Lee Clement Arena.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Castleton 7, New England College 1
  • Location: Lee Clement Arena – Henniker, N.H.
  • Records: Castleton 8-8-0 (4-5-0 LEC) | NEC 4-11-0 (3-6-0 LEC)

How It Happened
Castleton wasted little time taking control of the contest. After dropping the opening faceoff, Annika Nelson opened the scoring just 1:48 into the game with her first goal of the season, set up by Taylor Adams and Maysa Ford. Sixty seconds later, captain Moa Carlsson doubled the lead with her first of the night, assisted by Rainey Lay.

Despite Castleton's early push, the NEC goaltender kept the Pilgrims within striking distance by stopping 14 shots in the opening period.

The middle frame saw New England College generate some momentum, firing six shots on Gianna McCusker, all of which were turned aside. Castleton regained full control at 13:56 when Amanda Vaughn netted the eventual game-winner, with Brooke Noble and Mikayla Brightman picking up assists to make it 3-1.

The Spartans broke the game open in the third period. Carlsson scored her second of the night early in the frame, assisted by fellow captain Meg Aiken. Noble followed at 6:07, finishing a feed from Gracie Hurlbut and Caris Erickson to extend the lead to 5-0.

New England College spoiled McCusker's shutout bid with a goal in the 17th minute, but Castleton responded quickly. Brightman scored at 18:30 off assists from Vaughn and Carlsson, and Rachel McNeil capped the scoring with a goal at 19:58, assisted by Morgan Arscott, sealing the 7-1 victory.
