Baseball Concludes the 2025 Season

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team concluded the 2025 campaign on Friday, with two losses to Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College, falling 10-2 and 14-5.

Game 1:
The Basics

How it Happened
  • The Spartans were on the board first before the first inning came to a close, with Mason Meinke shooting a single up the middle, bringing in Jack Boyle to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Anchormen tied the game with a home run at the top of the third to make it a ball game.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Boyle launched a triple down the right field line, allowing Tyler Dubreuil to score, putting Castleton up one.
  • Rhode Island answered back, exploding in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs to take a 7-2 lead.
  • With strong defense and pitchers on both sides, it wasn't until the top of the eighth that another run would cross the plate with the Anchormen bringing in another run off a single down the right-field line, extending their lead.
  • Scoring twice at the top of the ninth, Rhode Island secured the 10-2 win, shutting down the Spartan offense at the bottom of the inning.
Top Performers
Boyle and Turner Clews led the Spartans with two hits each, with four more players combining for four hits and an RBI.

Sam Crawford saw the Spartans through four and two-third innings with four strikeouts and two walked batters. Owen Phelps threw for three and one-third innings with one strikeout, and Ethan Nichols closed out the final inning.

How it Happened
  • The Anchormen jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two, putting the pressure on the Spartans, who delivered before the inning came to a close.
  • Jackson Cardozo sent a double to center field, with Dubreuil booking it home to give Castleton a run.
  • With the bases loaded three batters later, Tommie Shaw was walked, allowing another run to score, and all three runners advanced on a wild pitch on the next batter, bringing Justin Strozyk in, putting the Spartans down two.
  • Rookie Robbie Briggs launched a single through the left side, bringing Shaw and Dillon Pallatto home, giving Castleton a 5-4 lead.
  • Rhode Island bounced back in the second inning, scoring three runs to take a two-run lead, before tacking on four more runs in the top of the third.
  • The Spartan offense struggled to get things going against the Rhode Island pitchers, and the Anchormen were able to tack on two more runs in the fifth.
  • Castleton went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, putting the Anchormen up again, where they tacked on their final run of the game.

Top Performers
Dubreuil led the Spartans with two hits and Briggs led the team with two RBIs.

With a slew of pitchers used throughout game two, Adam Winchell earned the start, with two strikeouts in two innings before Nicholas Griffin relieved him for the third inning, adding one strikeout. Patrick Hallett tabbed Castleton's last strikeout in the fourth inning before Stephen Coffey, Michael Malloy, and Nick Lescarbeau closed out the final four innings of play.

Castleton's season concluded with an overall record of 13-25 and 4-12 in LEC play.
