RUTLAND, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's tennis team earned three singles victories on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell 6-3 to the University of Southern Maine in Little East Conference action at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club.
After being swept in doubles play, the Spartans showed resilience in singles. Remy Maynard picked up a thrilling win at No. 3 singles, outlasting Zac Howe in a three-set battle, 6-3, 1-6, 11-9. Valero Echegoyen followed with a 10-8 win at No. 4 singles, and Trevor Castino notched a straight-set victory at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2 to round out the Spartans' scoring.
Miki Almirall pushed his match at No. 1 singles to three sets, taking the second set 6-1 before narrowly falling 7-5 in the third to Jaden Parker. Tanner Ciufo also went the distance at No. 2, taking the opening set 6-3 before dropping a close second-set tiebreak and the third, 6-3.
The Huskies swept the doubles round, highlighted by an 8-3 win at No. 1 and an 8-4 decision at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match and No. 6 singles were decided by default in favor of Southern Maine.
