STOWE, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's tennis team secured its third win of the season on Sunday morning with a 6-3 road victory over VTSU Johnson at the Top Notch Tennis Facility.
The Spartans came out strong in doubles play, winning two of the three matches. Miki Almirall and Valero Echegoyen earned an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard dominated their match at No. 2, 8-1. Johnson claimed No. 3 doubles by default.
In singles action, Castleton picked up four wins to seal the team victory. Almirall took down Adiance Cheromiah in straight sets at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2, and Ciufo outlasted Jack Senecal in a back-and-forth three-set match at No. 2 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 10-5. Maynard and Echegoyen delivered convincing straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Johnson earned default wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to round out the scoring.
With the win, Castleton improves to 3-6 on the season and will head to VTSU Lyndon on Tuesday, April 22 for a 4 p.m. start.
