WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision on the road Tuesday afternoon against UMass Boston at the Weymouth Club.
The Spartans' lone victory came at No. 3 singles, where Remy Maynard secured a hard-fought three-set win (6-3, 3-6, 7-6) over Maxwell Dill to prevent the sweep. Maynard also teamed up with Tanner Ciufo in a tightly contested No. 2 doubles match, falling just short, 7-5.
In other doubles action, Miki Almirall and Valero Echegoyen were defeated 7-1 at the top spot, while the third doubles pairing of Ben Chilkott and Dylan Shiland dropped their match by default.
Almirall put up a fight in No. 1 singles, pushing both sets but ultimately falling 7-6, 7-4 to Dominik Dwyer. Ciufo, Echegoyen, and Chilkott each fell in straight sets at the No. 2, 4, and 5 spots, respectively, while Shiland dropped his match by default at No. 6 singles.
The Spartans return to action this Saturday, April 19 at noon when they host the University of Southern Maine in another Little East Conference showdown.
