RUTLAND, VT. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's tennis team battled hard in a competitive match but ultimately fell to Salem State, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club.
The Spartans picked up one win in doubles play, as the duo of Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard earned an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 spot. Miki Almirall and Alberto Lantelme were blanked 8-0 at the No.1 spot, while Ben Chilkott and Trevor Castino fell 8-3 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, Maynard delivered a dominant performance at the third spot, winning 6-0, 6-0. Valero Echegoyen added another point for the Spartans at the fourth spot with a gutsy 3-set victory, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-4). Ciufo fought hard at the second spot, taking the first set in a tiebreak but falling in three 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 4-6. Almirall, Chilkott, and Dylan Shiland dropped their matches at the first, fifth, and sixth positions respectively, as the Vikings secured the team win.
With the loss, Castleton drops to 2-4 on the season. The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, April 15 with a trip to UMass Boston set to begin at 1 p.m.
