SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball team swept Skidmore College on Saturday. The Spartans tallied a combined 21 runs with a 11-0 win in game one and a 10-5 victory in game two. They improved to 7-5 on the year and have won four straight.

How It Happened:
- The Spartans got off to an early start with Gould starting with a single towards the shortstop. Castleton's next two batters were walked to load the bases. Alexis Rogers capitalized on a wild pitch to make it home and give Castleton a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
- Gould took to the mound and made quick work of the first three batters she faced, punching out two with zero batters touching base.
- Francie McMahon made her Spartan debut and collected her first career hit with a single. Jordan Hill reached base with a bunt to put two runners on the corners. Hill then stole second to put two Spartans in scoring position.
- Gould crushed a single to left field for two RBIs to put the Spartans ahead at 3-0 at the top of the second.
- In the top of the fourth, Castleton once again saw McMahon reach base on a double, and Hill hit a single and stole second to put the two on second and third.
- Taylor Russell hit a single to bring home all runners to extend Castleton's lead to five.
- Mikayla Walsh hit her third triple of the year, sending Abby Hacker home in the fifth inning. Walsh crossed home plate on an RBI single from Kayleigh Osterhaudt. Giving Castleton a 7-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
- Gould stayed hot on the mound, striking out her sixth and seventh batters of the game to keep the Thoroughbreds scoreless.
- The Spartans turned their game up a notch with five hits and four runs in the top of the sixth inning.
- Rogers started the inning with a double to right center field. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and Hacker took to first after being walked at her at bat. Walsh hit a double to collect two RBIs to increase Castleton's lead to nine.
- Osterhaudt hit an RBI double of her own and reached home on McHahon's at-bat to give Castleton an 11-0 lead.
- The Spartans solidified their victory with a double play to end the game in six innings and improve to 6-5 on the year.

How It Happened:
- Skidmore opened the scoring after a couple of errors from the Spartans' fielding, giving them two runs on only one hit to give them a 2-0 lead.
- The Thoroughbreds generated momentum by collecting three hits in the bottom of the second. Madison Bonham hit an RBI single toward third base to increase Skidmore's lead to three.
- Castleton started to crack the bats in the top of the third. Hill and Gould each reached base on singles. Hill was able to make it home after a groundout hit from Rogers, giving Castleton their first run of the game.
- Russell hit a single to advance Gould to third. Walsh then hit a single through the left side to advance the runners and bring home Gould to make it a 3-2 game.
- DeLong was able to slow down Skidmore in the third inning with a punch out and two quick groundouts to turn the inning over.
- The Spartans erupted in the top of the fourth, with Jess Heinrichs kicking it off with a two-run home run to give Castleton their first lead of the game at 4-3. This was Heinrich's first career home run and the first for the Spartans this season.
- With bases loaded, Russell drove a single toward the shortstop to advance all runners and extend Castleton's lead to five. The Spartans tacked on two more runs to cap off a five-hit, five-run inning to give them a 7-3 lead.
- Lauren Ross entered the bottom of the fifth inning for DeLong with two runners on base. With a sacrifice flyout to right field, Bonham was able to cross home plate to cut into Castleton's lead at 7-4.
- After a dropped fly by Skidmore's pitcher, Castleton tallied their eighth run in the sixth inning with Walsh sliding into home.
- Skidmore's Bonham continued her strong game with an RBI double to trail Castleton by three once again. Elkins entered the game in the bottom of the sixth to get the final out of the inning for Castleton.
- The Spartans loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning. McMahon collected an RBI after showing discipline at the plate and getting walked on a full count to extend Castleton's lead to nine.
- Hacker advanced the runners on a sacrifice flyout, bringing home Russell for Castleton's last run of the game.
- Elkins stood strong on the mound and didn't allow the Thoroughbreds to string any runs together, preventing them from any comeback attempt and earning her first career save.
- Castleton secured their fourth straight victory and their second sweep in a row with a 10-5 victory against Skidmore.

VTSU Castleton will travel to Willimantic Conn. to take on Little East Conference opponent Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, March 29 in a doubleheader matchup with games taking place at 12 and 2 p.m.
