Softball Debuts 2025 Season Against Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball team kicked off the 2025 season with a doubleheader matchup against Middlebury College on Monday.

How It Happened:
  • Kristyn Carroll scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and provided a two-run RBI double in the second inning to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
  • Middlebury extend their lead to six with three runs on two hits in the third inning.
  • Masson Billert collected a double at the top of the fourth. Dana Elkins hit a single to advance Billert to third, looking for their first run of the game. Lont held strong on the mound and struck out her fifth batter of the game.
  • The Panthers scored two more runs to declare the run-ahead rule and end the game after five innings played, securing the victory.

How It Happened:
  • Middlebury scored two early runs to give them 2-0 lead.
  • Taylor Russell sent a single down center field to give Castleton their first hit of the game.
  • The Panthers strung together another strong third inning, crossing home plate four times to extend their lead to 6-0
  • The Spartans recouped in the fourth inning with a quick outing for the Panthers to regain some momentum
  • Middlebury finished with five hits and two runs in the fifth inning to give them a 8-0 victory after five innings of play

VTSU Castleton travels down to North Myrtle Beach, S.C. for a four-day outing at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, with their first contest taking place Thursday, March 13 at 1 p.m. against Gwynedd Mercy University.
