QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's alpine skiing team celebrated its four seniors this weekend at West Mountain. The team finished third on Saturday and second on Sunday in two days of giant slalom.
Saturday
Alberto Lantelme led the Spartans on day one with a time of 2:12.37 to place fourth, Sondre Andersen posted a time of 2:12.87 in sixth, senior Aksel Stroem-Hansen had a time of 2:14.42 to place eighth, and Lucas Pons Morillo rounded out the top-10 with a time of 2:14.61. Nate Hazen (12th), Jack Conneely (18th), Oliver Olsen (19th), Leo Schnipper (24th), Miki Almirall (25th), and Sean Scanlon (33rd) completed the Spartans finishers.
Castleton posted a combined time of 6:39.66 to place third, with Babson taking the top spot with a time of 6:34.52, and UMass Amherst taking second with a time of 6:36.81.
Sunday
Valero Echegoyen posted a time of 2:00.55 on day two, to place fourth and lead the Spartans, with Andersen following behind in fifth with a time of 2:01.38. Hazen rounded out the top 10 with a 2:02.61 in 10th. Conneely (14th), Pons Morillo (16th), Kevin McDonough (24th), Matthew Moeckel (30th), Almirall (37th), Schnipper (38th), and Scanlon (41st) rounded out the finishers for Castleton.
The Spartans had a combined time of 6:04.54, placing second, with Babson taking first with a time of 5:58.33, and Clarkson placing third with a time of 6:08.02.
The program honored Stroem-Hansen, McDonough, Almirall, and Filippo Collini for their hard work, dedication, and lasting impact on their teammates and the alpine program.
The Spartans head to Massachusetts for slalom at Berkshire East on Saturday, February 8, and Catamount on Sunday, February 9.
