RUTLAND, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey team closed out their regular season play on Saturday against New England Hockey Conference opponent Elmira College. The Soaring Eagles claimed a 9-0 victory over the Spartans to finish 17-7-1 (14-3-1) overall, while the Spartans finished 11-13-1 (7-10-1 NEHC).
Victoria Bakopanos and
Gianna McCusker spent an even amount of time in the net for Castleton. Bakopanos started the game and made 16 saves, while McCusker took over at the halfway point and made 23 stops against Elmira.
The Soaring Eagles scored two quick goals halfway through the opening period to take a 2-0 lead after one period of play.
Elmira scored on back-to-back powerplays to extend their lead to four with 10 minutes left to play in the second period. They went on to score twice more in the second period to head to the final period with a 6-0 lead.
The Spartans were dominate on the dot, winning 44-of-67 faceoffs in Saturday's contest.
Meg Aiken and
Mikayla Brightman led the way with a combined 29 wins for the Spartans.
Elmira found the back of the net three more times in the third period to cap off a 9-0 win at Spartan Arena.
