Women's Basketball Closes Out Montreal Shootout in Tight Battle With Continentals

SAINT-LAMBERT, Quebec – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team closed out the Montreal Shootout on Tuesday, falling in a closely contested matchup to Hamilton College, 59-52.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 59-52 Hamilton
  • Location: Saint-Lambert, Quebec
  • Records: 7-5 Hamilton | 3-7 Castleton
How it Happened:
The Spartans were outscored 20-13 in the first quarter, with Isabelle Cole draining two three-pointers. Castleton took advantage of Continental turnovers, scoring six points in the first frame off turnovers.

Castleton flipped the script in the second quarter, with Schuylar Nolan putting up four points, with her first made layup bringing the Spartans within six with less than three minutes to go in the half. She drained yet another layup a minute later, cutting the lead to four, but the Continentals shot back with a jump shot to go up six (25-31). Arianna Coombs knocked down a jump shot with 36 seconds left, but Hamilton added one more with a made free throw before time expired, heading into the half up five (27-32).

The third quarter saw Coombs and Stasia Epler combine for 10 of the Spartans' 11 points in the frame, while the team worked to keep the Continentals at bay with a deficit of as little as three with five minutes remaining. Despite the Spartans' efforts, Hamilton ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, heading into the final frame with a 12-point lead (38-50).

Castleton limited the Continentals to just nine points in the fourth quarter, putting up 14 of their own. Emily Adams posted four points in one minute, working to make a dent in the Continentals' 19-point lead, which sparked a 12-0 run for the Spartans to end the game. However, it was not enough, as Hamilton won 59-52.

  • Epler led with 11 points, grabbing four rebounds.
  • Coombs posted 10 points, with three rebounds and two assists.
