CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team moved back into second place in the third installment of the New England Wrestling Association's (NEWA) team tournament rankings, released on Monday. Ten Spartans earned top-eight rankings in their respective weight classes, contributing to the team's 97 total points.
Castleton sits second with 97 points, trailing only Coast Guard with 115 points. Williams College is third with 83 points, Johnson & Wales ranks fourth with 81 points, and Springfield College rounds out the top five with 55 points.
The Spartans have two top-ranked wrestlers in
Drew Marchese at 125 pounds and
Josh Negron at 197 pounds. Marchese sits 17-3 on the season heading into the holiday break, finishing fourth at this weekend's North Central Invitational, which saw him face the top two wrestlers in the country. Negron is 17-4 on the season, and was Castleton's top finisher at the North Central Invitational in second, taking down the fifth-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds.
Nicolas Balella,
Nathaniel Camiscioli, and
Desmond McLaughlin were slotted second at 141, 157, and 184 pounds, respectively. Balella moved to 16-7 at 141 pounds after a fifth-place finish at the North Central Invitational, while Camiscioli is now 14-4 after a fifth-place finish at the event as well. McLaughlin took third at North Central, moving to 17-4 on the year.
Jashon Holmes was slotted third by NEWA at 165 pounds, and is 11-3 on the season thus far.
Joseph Kennedy is ranked sixth at 149 pounds and is 12-6 on the season.
Colby Celuck was picked sixth at 174 pounds, sitting 10-10 on the season.
Keonta Crawford was slotted seventh at 285 pounds, compiling a 15-9 record during his sophomore campaign.
Stone Farnsworth rounds out Castleton's NEWA rankings, in eighth at 133 pounds. He finished fifth at North Central, going 3-2 at the event, which brought his season record to 18-7.
The Spartans will appear at the NEWA Dual Championships in January, hosted by Johnson & Wales.
