Women's Basketball Stymied by Anchorwomen

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team dropped Saturday's Little East Conference matchup against Rhode Island College, 73-44, on the road as they head into the holiday break.

How it Happened:
The Anchorwomen led after the first quarter, 18-13. Arianna Coombs scored four points for the Spartans, and Stasia Epler hit a three-pointer in the final 15 seconds to reduce the deficit to five.

In the second frame, Nevaeh Camp started the Spartans off with a layup, cutting the lead to three, before Rhode Island started to push the lead further. With four minutes left in the half, Rhode Island had its largest lead of the day (34-21) before Arianna Coombs knocked down a layup for Castleton's final points of the half (34-23). Rhode Island added two more points before the buzzer sounded, taking a 13-point lead, heading into halftime (36-23).

The Spartans had their work cut out for them in the third quarter, after the Anchorwomen took a 22-point lead just four minutes in (51-29), and held Castleton to just nine points in the frame, which were scored by a slew of Spartans.

Castleton drained four layups in the final quarter, with Emily Adams cutting a 27-point lead down to 25 points with two free throws, with just over seven minutes to play (59-34). The Spartans fought in the final seven minutes, but Rhode Island found itself with the largest lead of the day, 32 points, with one minute to go (73-41). Schuylar Nolan knocked down a layup, and Bella Coombs finished the game off with a free throw, cutting the lead to 29 points, as Rhode Island took the 73-44 win.

By the Numbers:
  • Arianna Coombs led the team with 12 points, adding two rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
  • Camp led in rebounding with 10, contributed nine points, and one assist.
What's Next
As the squad heads into the holiday break, they will return for the Montreal Classic at the end of the month. They will face Oneonta on December 29 at 4 p.m. and Hamilton on December 30 at 4 p.m.
