Women's Hockey Secures LEC Win Against NEC in Overtime

RUTLAND, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's ice hockey team earned its first Little East Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, taking down New England College in overtime, 2-1.

The Basics
  • Final Score: VTSU Castleton 2, New England College 1 (OT)
  • Location: Spartan Arena – Rutland, Vt.
  • Records: Castleton 2-2-0 (1-1-0 LEC) | NEC 1-3-0 (0-2-0 LEC)
How It Happened
The Spartans controlled much of the opening period, outshooting the Pilgrims 17-8 before breaking through late. Moa Carlsson found Ellie Schliebener across the ice, and her shot was tipped home by Taylor Adams for her first goal of the season, giving Castleton a 1-0 lead after one.

NEC answered just 58 seconds into the second period to tie the game. Castleton continued to dominate puck possession and outshot the Pilgrims 20-6 in the frame, but couldn't reclaim the lead.

Neither team found the net in the third, despite a late Castleton penalty that carried into overtime. The Spartans killed off the 4-on-3 advantage behind strong work from goaltender Kara Bosally and key blocks by Olivia Carter and Morgan Arscott. Just seconds after returning to even strength, Schliebener intercepted a pass and fed Carlsson, who buried the game-winner at 1:21 to seal the 2-1 win.

By the Numbers
  • Carlsson, the reigning LEC Player of the Week, tallied two points (1G, 1A).
  • Schliebener added two assists.
  • Bosally earned her first win of the season in her first start, stopping 24 shots.

Up Next
The Spartans will hit the road on Friday, November 14, as they travel to Southern Maine for an LEC battle with the Huskies, set for a 4 p.m. puck drop.
