Spartans Steam Roll Wolves in LEC Quarterfinals

CASTLETON, Vt. – The fourth-seeded Vermont State University Castleton field hockey squad returned to winning in a big way, taking down fifth-seeded WestConn at home in the Quarterfinal round of the Little East Conference Championships, 6-1.

The Basics
• Final Score:
 VTSU Castleton 6, WestConn 1
• Location: Dave Wolk Stadium – Castleton, Vt.
• Records: Castleton 8-10 (3-3 LEC) | WestConn 7-11 (2-4)

How It Happened
A well-matched battle early, the pair traded shots that were off the mark to be scoreless through most of the first. Castleton was finally able to get organized offensively in the ninth minute as it capitalized on a Brooke Noble penalty corner insert, which Jess Smithson redirected to put her squad up, 1-0. The Spartans were able to increase their advantage to two scores as Ava LaRoss recorded hers with three minutes to go in the first quarter.

The hosts were able to add another early in the third, this time a tally by Genevieve Pitts as she tipped a LaRoss shot from the top of the circle for a 3-1 lead. Despite being manhandled offensively, WestConn finally got a score of its own in the final minutes of the first half, as Alyssa Montalvo was able to beat the Castleton keeper thanks to a dish by Kylie Dishaw to make it 3-1.

Castleton tacked on another goal in the 43rd minute, this time owned by Brooke Noble, assisted by Pitts.

The Spartans sealed the deal in the final stanza putting up two scores in the final three minutes. Both were unassisted tallies by LaRoss, rocketing her team to a 6-1 quarterfinal victory.

By the Numbers
  • It was all LaRoss as the sophomore finished the day with seven points on a hat trick and one assist. In the last meeting earlier this season, she put up five points on two goals and an assist.
  • Noble and Pitts finished the day with three points on a goal and an assist.
  • Smithson collected two points on the game-opening goal.
  • The Spartan defense ensured that Zoe Martin had a good day, only allowing five shots on goal. All of which, the senior was able to turn away.
  • Castleton outshot WestConn 22-12, while also having an advantage in penalty corners 15-7.
