CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team is ranked fourth in the second New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) tournament rankings, released on Thursday. Ten Castleton wrestlers are ranked in the top eight of their respective weight classes, contributing to the team's points.
The Spartans sit in fourth place with 81 team points, behind Williams College, which is in third place with 88 points. The United States Coast Guard Academy sits first with 101 points, and Johnson & Wales is right behind them in second with 99 points. Springfield College rounds out the top five with 64 points.
Drew Marchese is Castleton's highest-ranked wrestler, holding the top spot at 125 pounds.
Nathaniel Camiscioli is second at 157 pounds,
Desmond McLaughlin is also second at 184 pounds, and
Josh Negron is second at 197 pounds.
Jashon Holmes is ranked fourth at 165 pounds, and
Colby Celuck is sixth at 174 pounds.
Aidan Shufelt and
Stone Farnsworth also made their first appearances in the NEWA rankings. Shufelt ranks seventh at 133 pounds, and Farnsworth ranks seventh at 141 pounds.
Nicolas Balella (149) and
Keonta Crawford (285) entered the NEWA rankings for the first time as well, both ranking eighth in their respective weight classes.
The Open Mat released its updated rankings on Wednesday, with Marchese (125) ranking sixth, Camiscioli (157) ranking seventh, and
Connor Gregory (174) ranking ninth.
Evan Day (285) was ranked 11th, Holmes (165) was ranked 15th, and McLaughlin was ranked 19th at 184 pounds.
D3wrestle.com updated its rankings last week, prior to the Spartans' home opener. The website named Camiscioli (157) and Gregory (174) eighth in their respective weight classes, while Marchese (125), Holmes (165), and Day (285) were labeled contenders in their weight classes. Negron earned honorable mention at 197 pounds, to close out Castleton's ranked wrestlers across the three rankings.
The team hosts the Castleton Tri-Match on Saturday, November 22, welcoming #3 Roanoke College and Stevens. Duals will begin at 12 p.m., with Castleton's first match set for 1:30 p.m.
