Second-Half Surge Not Enough as Spartans Fall 75–64 at Russell Sage

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's basketball team fell 75-64 to the Russell Sage College Gators at the Kahl Campus Center in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night.

The Basics

Final Score: Russell Sage 75, VTSU Castleton 64

Location: Kahl Campus Center - Albany, N.Y.

Records: Russell Sage 4-0 | VTSU Castleton 1-4

How It Happened

Castleton struggled early, falling behind as turnovers allowed Russell Sage to build a double-digit lead. The Spartans shot just 19.4% from the field and 6.3% from the arc in the first half, while the Gators hit 32.4% from the field and 30% from the arc. Despite the deficit, Castleton kept pressure on the Gators with points off turnovers and second-chance opportunities.

Ben Seiler led the Spartans in the first half, hitting three of six field-goal attempts to help keep Castleton within reach. Will Radcliff, despite early scoring struggles, was a force on the boards, pulling down multiple rebounds and creating second-chance points.

The second-half saw marked improvement from Castleton. Radcliff went 6-for-10 from the field, added a three-pointer, and converted three of six free throws. Seiler matched Radcliff's scoring with 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, providing steady scoring and key rebounds.

The Spartans generated several runs by taking advantage of Russell Sage mistakes. Radcliff and Elijah Maldonado sparked fast-break opportunities off steals, while Seiler knocked down key jumpers to close the gap. Castleton earned eight second-chance points and 15 points off turnovers, but Russell Sage maintained control, shooting 35.4% from the field, 37.9% from the arc, and 60% from the free-throw line to take the game, 75-64.

  • Radcliff led the Spartans with a double-double, finishing with 16 points, 13 rebounds, one assist, and two steals.
  • Seiler added 16 points and six rebounds, and Maldonado contributed 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal, helping spark multiple offensive runs.
