How It Happened
Castleton came out swinging in the opening set, starting with a 4-0 run fueled by kills from three different Spartans and an ace from
Alondra Rojas. After Southern Maine capitalized on a pair of Spartan attack errors, freshman
Olivia Smith responded with a kill and two service aces to extend the lead midway through the set. The Huskies struggled to contain Castleton's balanced offense, powered by attacks from four different Spartans, giving the home team a 16-7 advantage. Kills from Taylor Joyal and Lizzy Harbester, along with a few Spartan errors, helped Southern Maine reduce the deficit to 18-12, but the momentum wasn't enough to hold off the Spartans' relentless attack. Kills from
Madison Sheehan and
Lilli Burrows closed the set, giving Castleton a 25-17 win.
Castleton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring three points before Southern Maine registered their first. The Spartans' offense was powered by Rojas, Smith, and Sheehan, who combined for multiple kills and aces early in the set. The Spartans initially looked in control, but Southern Maine responded with aggressive attacks from Joyal, Harbester, and Kylee Eubanks-Hemme, exploiting some Spartan attack errors. Southern Maine maintained pressure at the net, forcing Castleton into mistakes and closing the gap. Kills from Smith and Burrows kept Castleton competitive, but the Huskies offense proved too strong in the final stretch, taking the set 25-22 and evening the match at one set apiece.
Castleton regrouped in the third, coming out with a sense of urgency and controlling the tempo from the start. Senior captain Lily Prevost provided a steadying presence, making key digs and keeping the ball in play, while Rojas orchestrated the offense with eight assists, distributing the ball to Smith and Burrows for timely kills. The Spartans' defense was relentless, holding Southern Maine to a .077 hitting percentage and forcing 12 errors. Smith's consistent net play and Rojas' pressure-filled serves kept the Huskies on their heels, creating multiple scoring runs, allowing Castleton to pull away for a tightly contested 25-19 win.
Castleton started the fourth set trailing 0-2 against Southern Maine, but the Spartans quickly regained control with three straight points to take the lead. Castleton's offense was firing on all cylinders, with kills from Smith and Sheehan, while Rojas and
Brianna Walsh added a few aces to maintain the lead. Southern Maine tried to rally with strong attacks and were able to successfully take advantage of a few Spartan errors, but Castleton's defense, anchored by Prevost, kept the Huskies from closing the gap. The Spartans maintained their composure through momentum swings, finishing the set 25-19 and securing the 3-1 historic victory.
