How It Happened
Castleton opened the first set under pressure as Keene State jumped out to an early 5-0 lead behind strong serving from Alexis Small and aggressive play at the net. Castleton began to fight back with key kills from first year Sam Ford and capitalizing on the Owls' errors. Nicolette Vaughn and Alondra Rojas chipped in a few service aces to keep the Spartans in the game. The halfway point of the first set featured a back-and-forth battle, but Keene's pressure on serve and attack errors from the Spartans allowed the Owls to pull away late with a 25-21 win.
Set two saw Castleton struggle to keep pace with Keene State's strong offensive pressure. Rojas continued to be a major force, delivering several kills and service aces, but unforced errors caused the Spartans to get behind. Despite solid contributions from Vaughn and Delia Roulston, extending rallies and contributing aces, the Owls took advantage of the Spartan errors. Castleton couldn't slow down the Owls' run, losing 25-15.
The third set saw Castleton build early momentum as Rojas set the tone with a service ace and several well placed assists to Ray to put the Spartans ahead. However, Keene State's Delia Ryan led a pivotal 7-0 serving run midway through the set that swung momentum back towards the Owls and forced Castleton to a timeout. The Spartans responded with kills from Madison Sheehan and Ray, keeping the Spartans within reach. The rally was short lived and the Owls completed the comeback to close out the set 25-22, and seal the match.
