Men's Basketball Holds on for Convincing OT Win

GORHAM, Me. – The Vermont State University men's basketball team triumphed in overtime, defeating the University of Southern Maine 100-90 on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartan offense was led by Will Radcliff, who scored 20 points and grabbed three offensive rebounds. Radcliff also led the team with six steals, adding four defensive boards. Ben Seiler (16 points), Troy Butler (15), Conner McKearin (14), Justin Schwarzbeck (11), and Tray Blount (11) all contributed double-digit points.

Schwarzbeck posted a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 18 rebounds (11 defensive, 7 offensive), along with a steal and an assist.

Castleton jumped out to an early lead, holding it for nearly 10 minutes in the first half, as Radcliff and Zach Thompson both hit three-pointers to give the Spartans an 8-4 advantage. However, momentum shifted to favor Southern Maine as it entered halftime ahead, 40-38.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with the score tied six times. Castleton found itself down 83-80 with 1:41 remaining, but Butler and McKearin hit consecutive threes to put the Spartans ahead 86-83 with 53 seconds to go. Southern Maine answered with a three-pointer of its own to tie the game at 86 with 16 seconds left. Butler had a chance to win it for Castleton in the final seconds, but his three-point attempt missed, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Castleton dominated, outscoring Southern Maine 14-4. The Spartans capitalized on the Huskies' foul trouble, which sent them to the free-throw line three times. Seiler went a perfect 4-for-4 from the stripe, and Schwarzbeck added two crucial free throws to seal the win.

The Spartans will look to build on their momentum when they host UMass Boston for a 7:30 p.m. LEC contest on Wednesday.
