Women's Soccer Trumps NEC 3-1 in Sunday's Contest

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer defeats New England College 3-1 Sunday afternoon.

VTSU Castleton defeated NEC with a goal in the 8th minute by junior Becky Hannwacker. Maggie McKearin fired a shot that deflected off a defender and landed right in front of Hannwacker to bury the ball past the keeper to give Castleton the lead.

NEC piled on the shots against the Spartans defense but struggled to get anything by junior Emma Ezzo who made eight saves in the victory. It was a high offensive game as a combined 29 shots were taken in the matchup. McKearin notched Castleton's second goal with a set-up play from Alexis Billings in the 59th minute to extend Castleton's lead to two.

The Pilgrims' Riley Vachon scored in the 76th minute to get back into the game. In just a few minutes after Vachon's goal, Billings answered back with a goal of her own in the 84th minute to shut down the NEC's comeback and give Castleton their second win of the season.

VTSU Castleton returns to action Wednesday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m. against RPI.
