NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team received their first defeat of the season to Colby-Sawyer in a 1-0 contest Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans played their second game over the weekend after drawing to Clarkson Saturday afternoon. Graduate
JP Maul made his season debut for the Spartans with an impressive nine saves in the contest. Maul helped keep the game in play for the Spartans with multiple close opportunity saves.
Despite the quick around, Castleton came out very aggressive and pressured the Chargers throughout the 90 minutes. Junior
Sean Butler hit a half volley shot that almost gave the Spartans the lead. VTSU Castleton put together 19 shots with 13 of them hitting on target, but nothing was able to get by the Chargers goalkeepers.
Colby-Sawyer earned one corner kick in the second half which made all the difference as Josh Warner was able to put the ball away into the back of the net in the 68th minute to give the Chargers the victory.
VTSU Castleton returns to action in a SUNYAC weekend taking on SUNY Potsdam Saturday, September 14 at 12:00 p.m. and then SUNY Canton on Sunday, September 15 at 12:00 p.m.
