Baseball Masters Chargers with 9-4 Victory

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team defeated Colby-Sawyer College 9-4 Wednesday afternoon.

Leading the way for the Spartans (8-28, 4-10) was junior Brandon Ramirez, who provided three RBIs in the Spartans victory, with his first being a solo home run in the second inning to open the scoring. VTSU Castleton sent six different pitchers out to the mound, combing for eight strikeouts, five walks, and 10 hits in Wednesday's contest, with Kevin Hewlett being credited with the victory.

With the Chargers securing a tying run in the bottom of the second, Castleton responded instantly with a three-run inning at the top of the third. Jared Maher sent a double to right field, sending Tyler McLain home from first base to take back the lead. Ramirez would then have a double of his own to bring in Maher and Jared Cafasso who was walked during his at-bat, to give Castleton a 4-1 lead.

In the fourth, Tommie Shaw set up Castleton's next score by reaching first with a drive down the right line and then making it home with an RBI single from Hunter Perkins to extend the Spartan's lead to five. Trey LaVigne collected an RBI single in the fifth inning with Maher scoring to put Castleton up 6-2.

The Spartans continued to pile up the runs on the Chargers, with their final three coming in the sixth inning. Kannon Dush reached base on a single and Perkins was hit by a pitch to set up runners on first and second. Jackson Cardozo advanced the runners and brought in Dush to score with an RBI single through the left side. Perkins would come in to score after a sacrifice fly out from Maher and Cardozo would come in to score after stealing home to secure Castleton's second straight victory.

The Spartans return to action in their final Little East Conference matchup of the regular season against Rhode Island College on Friday, May 3 at 12 and 3 p.m.
