Men's Lacrosse Falls at UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's lacrosse team was defeated 24-6 on Monday night at UMass Boston in Little East Conference play.
 
Five different Spartans had two points apiece, including Carter Frankenhoff and Jordan Damske, who had two goals apiece. Casey Meczywor and Preston Kozlowski each assisted twice and Cam Frankenhoff dished out one goal and one assist. Hunter Sarro also scored for the Spartan attack. Jonah Janaro nabbed eight ground balls and Chase Strychaluk stopped 14 shots in 30 minutes of action in goal. Zac Smith made nine saves in 19 minutes as well.
 
The Spartans sit at 3-12 overall and 2-5 in LEC play while the Beacons improve to 12-4 on the year with a 6-1 mark against LEC opponents. UMass Boston outshot Castleton 52-17 on goal and had a 55-23 edge in ground balls thanks to a 22-of-33 mark at the face-off spot. Both sides scored a pair of man-up goals.
 
 Greg Wolff had a five-goal day for the Beacons while Zach Mann and Sean Daley netted hat-tricks. Mann also had four assists in the contest. Matt Lucozzi won 14 face-offs to earn 10 ground balls and Otto Kirleis was credited with the win in goal making seven saves in 41 minutes.
 
The two sides went back-and-forth in the opening minutes, with the game level at 2-2 through the first 10 minutes of action. UMass Boston got on the board first before Cam Frankenhoff leveled the score at 1-1. After the Beacons took a 2-1 lead, Carter Frankenhoff netted his first of the day to knot it at 2-2. The Beacons scored three unanswered before the end of the first to lead 5-2 heading to quarter No. 2. The second quarter favored UMass Boston, with the lead growing to 10-2 before Damske got on the board. The Beacons pushed it to 12-3 at halftime.
 
Damske scored the first goal of the second half to make it 12-4 and Carter Frankenhoff made it 13-5 a few minutes later but seven straight goals by the Beacons spanning into the fourth quarter made it a 20-5 game. Sarro scored the Spartans' final goal in the fourth.
 
VTSU Castleton wraps up the regular season on Friday at Eastern Connecticut at 4 p.m.
